During their meeting in Ankara on 8 February 2016, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and then-Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced that NATO would monitor the flow of migrants in the Eastern Aegean Sea and work to stop illegal human trafficking and smuggling.
