This paper examines the fallout surrounding Jonathan Hill’s resignation as EU Commissioner of Financial Stability. EU Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker reacted to the resignation by assigning Hill’s dossier to EU Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis. According to the paper’s author, the new arrangement appears to be working well, primarily because of Dombrovskis’ stability-enhancing financial skills. His success also provides non-Eurozone countries the opportunity to press for desired personnel changes at the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets (DG FISMA), and thereby gain greater access to the EU economic policy shaping process.
