This paper reviews past and present nuclear weapons verification activities and current proposals to eliminate these arms. More specifically, the text’s author delve into 1) what constitutes ‘verification’, to include its compliance mechanisms; 2) the international verification commitments that currently exist; 3) the role international organizations play in promoting adherence to international weapons treaties; 4) a range of initiatives proposed by states, civil society groups and academic institutions to enhance future nuclear disarmament verification mechanisms; and 5) the political and legal challenges that must be overcome to ensure verification practices are truly effective.
