This paper examines how Beijing won the 2008 Olympic Games bid and what this means for China and its position in the world. The author examines the events that led to this victory and discusses the bid’s strengths, weaknesses and prospects until the start of the Games in 2008. He underlines that Beijing’s successful bid for the Games gives China an opportunity to signal its emergence as a leading player mainstream international affairs.
