This report examines the situation in Palestine after Palestine leader Yasser Arafat's death in 2004. It argues that his death could have longer-term positive implications for both Palestinian political reform and efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Yet, according to the author, in the short term, the impact will be more limited. He states that Arafat's immediate successors will not be able to end the current chaos in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, nor would the fundamentals of the impasse with Israel likely be overcome.
