This report examines the rising interest in nuclear power in Southeast Asia. According to the author, nuclear power development in the region faces questions about its economics and safety as well as nuclear weapon nonproliferation. A key issue is whether countries will embark on sensitive segments of the fuel cycle. The paper lists several approaches that could help allay such concerns, including international fuel supply mechanisms and the possibility of a cooperative approach to nuclear power development within ASEAN.
