This paper addresses the future of the trans-Atlantic relations and its implications for the role of the EU in the area of foreign, security and defense policy. It discusses the imbalance of strategy and tactics in international politics, reviews the profile of the EU concerning security and points to the influence of the global population development. The author argues that the tensions in the trans-Atlantic relations are a consequence of fundamental differences in the assessment of the strategic environment and the political impact of government action and diplomatic initiatives.
