This paper looks back at the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. The author identifies potential vulnerabilities in 2007 and assesses the IMF’s readiness to respond to a possible return of the crisis. He argues that while there is little chance of any repeat of 1997-98 any time soon, at some point in the future the core vulnerabilities of the crisis period will re-emerge.
