What are the international implications of Bashar al-Assad’s Russian-supported offensive against the city of Aleppo? As this paper sees it, Aleppo’s fall would constitute a major territorial victory for Assad and reinforce his negotiating position. However, regaining the city may also yield a fresh round of Western sanctions and result in the spread of heavy weaponry, terrorist attacks, and more refugees within Syria.
