This backgrounder reviews 1) the context that led to the 1967 Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies (OST); 2) the details of the Treaty, including some of its notable loopholes; and 3) why the accord may need to be updated if it is to deal effectively with the space-related challenges that exist today.
