This paper does indeed look at the ‘innovation ecosystem’ of lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS), with a particular emphasis on what these improvements might mean for the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW). While exploring this overarching theme, the text’s author also looks at 1) the R&D processes that create new LAWS technologies; 2) the methodological challenges associated with examining innovations in machine autonomy; 3) the extent of governmental and private sector R&D in the area of autonomous systems; 4) the academic issues that apply to the development of LAWS, and much more.
