This brief looks at what the US should do to maintain its influence over Internet governance, particularly in the wake of relinquishing control of the domain’s naming and addressing system in October 2016. The text also describes why the US ceded this responsibility and the problems the new multi-stakeholder approach may trigger, including the efforts of authoritarian governments to control Internet traffic.
