What defines a combined effects strategy and how has China used it to ensure its territorial integrity? To answer these questions, this paper analyzes the sixteen border disputes that Beijing has been embroiled in since 1949. The text’s author concludes that China’s overall pattern in these disputes has been to lead with inducements and then follow up with attempts to isolate, divide and force accommodations by its opponents.
