This paper examines the illicit trade of precious metals and gemstones and discusses possible solutions to the problem. The authors, representing EWI and the Russian metallurgical company Norilsk Nickel, summarize the conclusions and recommendations discussed by an informal international working group on countering precious metals trafficking. They argue that public-private partnerships offer a real chance of increasing transparency and monitoring in the trade of precious metals and gemstones.
