This policy brief takes stock of the UN arms embargoes in Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Sierra Leone and Somalia. The implementation challenges the embargoes face include 1) weak legislation; 2) limited public awareness about the sanctions already in place; 3) inadequate coordination among security agencies; 4) existing technological incapacities; 5) the porousness of borders and much more. The brief’s authors additionally highlight the reasons why it’s important for African states to implement arms embargoes and what sanctions policies the African Union and other stakeholders should follow.
