This background paper examines the role and use of private funds by humanitarian aid agencies during the period 1995-2005. Private funds include contributions from businesses, private individuals and foundations. The authors conclude that the growth of private funding has outpaced the respective growth of public funding for humanitarian action. Nonetheless, international governmental organizations still rely heavily on public funds. This paper also provides an overview of the fundraising strategies and mechanisms used by the private sector to engage in humanitarian action.
