This paper reviews the role of remittances in northern Pakistan in the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake. The authors find that recipient households of remittances faired and recovered better than those without. They conclude, however, that remittances often rely on vulnerable infrastructure - telecommunications, roads and bridges. Therefore, the authors caution that although remittances exert a positive effect, humanitarians should not regard them as a sufficient substitute for aid.
