This paper explores how remittances have affected the livelihoods of households in Hargeisa, Somaliland as well as broader Somalia. Part one reviews the available literature and contextualizes the discussion in Somalia's history since civil war erupted in 1988. Part two looks at how remittances have affected the socio-economic and demographic environment of Hargeisa, Somaliland.
