This paper examines the role of remittances in Haiti in the aftermath of cyclone Jeanne. The author argues that although remittances comprised an element of assistance, they were not sufficient to replace humanitarian aid or alleviate poverty. Specifically, the author highlights the importance of maintaining open or swiftly reopening remittance and communications channels following a natural disaster.
