This paper examines the way in which modern institutions such as science, business, the state and the military deal with risks. Using climate change as an example for the unknown risks into which scientific-technical societies have plunged humankind, the author maintains that the ignorance of the globalization of risk increases the globalization of risk. Thus, the author investigates the irony and ambivalence of risk.
