This paper traces security-related developments in the Persian Gulf region, focusing on the potential for cooperation with and exercise of influence by the EU. It describes the regional state of affairs, reviews the situation in Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia and presents recommendations for the EU. The authors state that the EU plays only a marginal strategic role in the region and is not in a position to compensate for the weakness of the US.
