This paper explores two Kenyan standardization initiatives in the cut flower industry. The author investigates how international social standards are localized and how standards are employed in different ways by different stakeholders in order to gain influence and to further specific goals. The analysis shows that when standards are negotiated, the power relations that exist between local stakeholders and along the global value chain are reflected and reproduced.
