This brief looks at China's aid program in the Pacific and examines its destabilizing side effects. According to the author, China's secretive, no-strings-attached approach to aid undermines Pacific development and Australia's interests by working against other donor attempts to improve accountability, good governance and stability. The author recommends that Australia take a far more active role in engaging China to improve the transparency and effectiveness of its aid and seek a leader-level agreement with China on development coordination in the Pacific.
