This bulletin discusses some of the implications of the 2008 Taiwanese legislative elections. The author suggests that the new conservative legislature, now controlled overwhelmingly by the Kuomintang (Nationalist) party, is a welcome development for both the United States and the People's Republic of China. The Kuomintang party's platform favors closer ties with China. The end of gridlock in Taiwan's legislature, furthermore, suggests hope for rejuvenating the Taiwanese economy and fostering US-Taiwan trade.
