This paper discusses the indirect talks between Israel and Syria that began in May 2008. The author examines the position of both conflicting parties, their stakes in the process and the role of Turkey as the leading intermediary between the two. The paper concludes that ineffective mediation, weak leadership and unrealistic expectations could be major stumbling blocks in the process and that the EU must take a more active role in order to ensure progress.
