This publication explains the madrassa educational system in Bangladesh and challenges prevailing negative opinions of the schools in the West. The author provides an historical overview of the schools and centrality of Islam in the Bangladeshi educational system. She concludes that madrassas perform an important function in a country where poor families cannot afford to send their children to modern schools.
