This paper reviews potential Chinese responses to the deployment of a US missile defense system (NMD). The author views China's doctrine of minimal nuclear deterrence as likely to change. US NMD provides additional and significant incentives for China to develop a more robust and modern nuclear deterrent force. Moreover the author argues Beijing's response to US missile defenses will influence the force structure that emerges over the next several decades in China.
