This paper explores the implications of the proposed US missile defense system for military contingencies involving the US, Taiwan and China. The author asserts that the China-Taiwan-US triangle of asymmetric capabilities, dominance and fervor, fosters a dangerously unstable environment in the Taiwan Strait, making escalation control difficult. The author proposes strategic dialogue and operational talks aimed at improving crisis management between the US and China, while calling for closer US military coordination with Taiwan.
