This article discusses how historical contingencies and events have caused Iran to put ballistic missiles at the center of its military doctrine. According to the text’s author, this preference is a suboptimal one, especially in relation to Tehran’s security needs or those of its regional allies. Because of institutional obstacles, however, Iran’s ability to extricate itself from this 'path of dependency' won’t be easy.
