This paper describes basic concepts used in nutrition, explains how and why nutrition information is displayed in the manner it is, and explains how nutrition surveys are constructed and interpreted. The authors show that malnutrition data can be used as an objective indicator of crisis. They argue that with better guidance on interpretation, acute malnutrition data could help in identifying the nature of crisis, and thereby help define appropriate responses to address malnutrition and its underlying causes.
