This paper examines regional diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East aimed at improving the region's stability by way of negotiation and mediation. It provides an overview of the different conflicts with a particular focus on the Arab-Israeli conflict, outlines the main characteristics of different types of mediation efforts, and examines which tactics regional actors adopted most. Finally, it offers recommendations for European policy on how to support conflict resolution in the Middle East. The authors argue that regional actors in the Middle East have taken on the responsibility of stabilizing the region, and that their successes promise cautious optimism for peace.
