This briefing paper discusses the interaction between HIV/AIDS, food and nutrition insecurity in eastern and southern Africa. The authors explain that households affected by adult illnesses and deaths with a high proportion of dependents are more vulnerable to food security shocks than other households. They also argue that impoverished families struggle to cope with the illness and deaths linked to HIV/AIDS, and often resort to distress coping strategies, such as the selling of key assets, that, among other things, threaten family cohesion.
