This paper assesses to what extent it is possible to argue that in most aid recipient countries, welfare indicators show that they are catching up with industrialized countries on measures other than economic growth. By examining a range of studies related to welfare indicators, growth and development aid and their interlinkages, it explores the role of aid in improving quality of life and points to alternative approaches that might be useful in analyzing development.
