This paper looks at the deepening rift within the Palestinian political leadership, commenting on the struggle between Fatah and Hamas. It outlines the state of relations between both structures, points to conflicting interests in the Middle East, and reviews different attempts at reconciliation. Subsequently, the paper sheds light on the aims and problems that shape the policies of Fatah's and Hamas' leadership. It concludes that national unity, to which both structures profess to aspire, is not on today's agenda, in contrast to the widely acknowledged incompatibility of Palestinian disunity with a serious Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
