This paper discusses the status of nuclear cooperation between India and US one year after the signing of a joint statement on 18 July 2005. It examines the potential challenges to the relationship such as the US legislative process and IAEA negotiations. The paper examines whether these challenges represent stumbling blocks that might derail the nuclear deal. In conclusion, the author asserts that these same challenges most likely will be stepping stones to India’s emergence as a global power.
