This paper serves as a backgrounder for the largest geographical province of Pakistan, Balochistan. It addresses the Baloch insurgencies in the second half of the 20th century; the grievances rooted in their denial to political rights; the exploitation of natural resources by the government; and security concerns. The paper explores the tribal composition of the province and related issues and gives an overview of the main Baloch national parties. Furthermore, the author outlines major developments that took place from 2003 to 2006.
