This handbook on public oversight of the security sector provides practical guidance on how to help make the security sector not only law-abiding but also transparent and accountable to society. It explores the roles civil society organizations (CSOs) can play in democratic security sector oversight, outlining how they can plan, structure and implement their activities in an informed and efficient manner. It argues that civil society actors need to be given the capacity to focus on different aspects of oversight issues, but function also as civil society representatives with the media, international actors and other stakeholders.
