This paper examines whether the US' withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty will lead to a further militarization of space. The author argues that outer space is an internationalized common area beyond the national jurisdiction of individual states, and therefore, security in space requires the complete ban of active military uses of space. The paper draws conclusions for the establishment of an effective regime for safeguarding the peaceful uses of outer space.
