This publication discusses NATO's role in the 2008 conflict between Russia and Georgia. The author examines the organization's options as they presented themselves at the time. He argues that NATO, unlike the EU, could not have played a mediating role in the conflict. The paper concludes that any important NATO involvement in the resolution of the conflict would not only have led to its escalation but also could have had a negative impact on the ongoing mediation efforts of the EU.
