This paper describes Save the Children Fund-UK's (SCF-UK) Food Economy Approach to analyzing household food security, adopted by the organization in the early 1990s. It details the way in which the access of individual households to food is identified and quantified. Three case studies examine the application of the approach in southern Sudan, northern Kenya and Rwanda highlighting some of the difficulties SCF-UK faced in implementing the approach. By describing the model and showing through case studies how it has been used to address food security problems, the author provides a starting point for further debate about the Food Economy Approach.
