This publication discusses the political economy of the war in Liberia and assesses the role of economic factors in supporting and fueling the conflict. The author argues that it is increasingly important for the humanitarian community to attempt to understand the dynamics of the political economy of war. The publication concludes that more detailed research on particular aspects of the war economy is required as well as the need for the humanitarian community to lobby donors and other actors to increase their understanding of its mechanisms.
