This publication addresses the production of biofuels and argues that in order to meet northern targets this production means increases in poverty and in prices for some food staples. Yet, it also explains that there are opportunities for domestic biofuels industries in the south that could create jobs in rural areas. The paper concludes that socio-environmental standards should be promoted to protect the rights of the poor to land and freedom from exploitation.
