This paper examines the resurgence of low-level violence in Aceh, Indonesia, in the run-up to the April general elections. The authors argue that the risk of sporadic violence in the region will persists, although it is unlikely to escalate or spread significantly. In order to address the violence, however, the roots of underlying tensions need to be addressed. The authors conclude that better policing, sustained civil society efforts and continued international donor support are all necessary for creating a more peaceful Aceh.
