This paper assesses the implementation of arms embargoes throughout Africa. It surveys the cases of South Africa, Rwanda, Angola, Burundi, Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Liberia, Somalia and Sudan. Noting the limited enforcement granted to African arms embargoes, the author puts forward several recommendations to enhance their effectiveness.
