This paper discusses the role of democracy, elections and political parties in Africa using a conceptual lens. It outlines the inseparability of elections and democracy, and details the various electoral systems and institutional frameworks in Africa. It further discusses the need for legitimate international and domestic observers as well as autonomous political parties.
