This paper discusses dynamics surrounding the six most common crimes committed in South Africa. The National Crime and Victimization Survey conducted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) during October-November 2007 informs the paper. It compares the data from the 1998, 2003 and 2007 surveys to provide a picture of provincial victimization trends, the sites and characteristics of the crimes, weapons used, victims’ familiarity with the perpetrators, and arrest and conviction trends.
