This paper chronicles some of the major cultural challenges the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) faced following the surrender of Japan and US' subsequent nation-building mission. It reviews the roles and accomplishments of the two most prominent analytic organizations that evolved to meet those socio-cultural challenges: the research and analysis (R&A) branch of the Operations Division; and Public Opinion and Sociological Research (PO&SR) Division. Finally, the paper presents some lessons learned from the operations functions associated with socio-cultural analysis during an occupation.
