This paper examines the underlying causes of the credit crisis in the US. In particular, it examines the emergence and collapse of the housing bubble and the significance of the complex financial instruments that transformed an asset price correction into a significant domestic and global economic downturn. The main focus is the response of governing institutions in the US.
