This report examines the nature and circumstances of sex and sexual violence in South African men’s prisons. It uses survey findings from 2004 and 2005. The authors highlight violence occurring behind bars, HIV transmission and implications for those involved. The report concludes with an overview of respondents’ advice on how Boksburg Youth Centre (BYC) could be made safer and suggests ways in which to prevent sexual violence.
