This report looks at the perceptions, attitudes and experiences of police officers relating to issues of race and gender in both the organization and the communities they serve. It focuses on the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Johannesburg, within the context of post-apartheid transition to democracy. The research findings demonstrate that the past decade of police transformation has resulted in substantial changes in the organizational culture of the SAPS. However, this is the result of transformation initiatives and a consequence of dramatic broader social and political changes.
